Hello, all.
We're going to be in the Charlottesville area this weekend and are
wondering if there are any 'must find' boxes in the area or any WOM
boxes along the Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Parkway that you'd be willing
to share.
Thanks!

Don't know of any, but I've heard there are some great views.

Beautiful. So much wildlife.
But we were there in the fall and there were a lot of bees.

Should be freezing there right now. Wish I had stopped there on my trip to
Virginia, but I didn't get a chance. Must be beautiful in the summer.
I didn't realize that you had been there. How was it?

Since the Blue Ridge Parkway is maintained by the National Park
Service who is known to frown on boxing, there may not be too many
boxes along the parkway. Let us know what you find.

It was really amazing, Seth! But bees never ruin our trip - we love bees!
Must be from my uncle who raised bees up north. I always found them very interesting creatures.
Took a side trip to visit Monticello but there were tons of school kids there visiting so we never got in.
It's a beautiful part of the country, that's for sure.

I bet. So, the bees weren't that much of a problem....good. I've been to Monticello. I was lucky enough to know someone (from high school) who worked there. I got a special tour of the house. They let me pick things up and look at them as long as I left things as I had found them. Recent Activity

While it is true that the Parkway is ruled by the NPS, in some areas
the NPS land is actually quite narrow and state forest land, where
boxes may be located, is accessible by trails. (There are places like
this along the Parkway in NC.)
Some careful searches may reveal more boxes up there than you might
think. Good luck.

When I was there, there were NPS rangers everywhere. I wasn't boxing at the time, but their presence was very noticeable. With what I now know about letterboxing, I think it would be difficult to sneak around without being seen or at least seen as suspicious. Which would make planting difficult as well. I did ask a few other boxers about the boxing there and they said it was marginal at best.

NPS used to have an anti-geocaching/letterboxing policy across the
board. We just had a similar topic in our geocaching forum on proper
use of varying lands (NPS, DNR, NWS, USDA, etc) and one individual
posted this excerpt from a contact they had regarding a softening of
that stance.
Basically, the rule of thumb we try to use (and not everyone does it,
but should for the integrity of the hobby) is to get permission from
the manager of the controlling entity before placing anything.
Here is the excerpt (following is cut and pasted from original
source):
New NPS Geocaching Policy Provides Opportunities for Outdoor
Adventure
Geocaching, Virtual Caching and Letterboxing are GPS activities that
offer significant recreational and educational value to visitors,
including opportunities for a growing number of families to
experience outdoor adventure in parks. The National Park Service
recently released a policy review on GPS-based recreational
activities in park areas addressing public outreach and education
challenges, as well as monitoring and management policies.
The recreation community can aid the National Park Service in
promoting appropriate GPS activities.
